The plasminogen activation cascade is a serine protease cascade in which the inactive zymogen plasminogen is converted into plasmin.  Plasmin's primary function is thought to be the dissolution of blood clots.  Plasmin is also thought to act as a proteolytic activator of other processes including tissue remodeling through its activation of the matrix metalloproteases.
